The Power of Someone to Save a Life
Michele Hagel didn’t always know that she had the power to save a life. But a Facebook post and a prayer changed that. Scrolling through her feed, she learned her fellow Medtronic employee, Mark Bubalo, had kidney failure. Grueling dialysis treatments kept him alive. He needed a kidney transplant. If a living donor stepped forward to restore his health and ultimately, save his life, he’d return to the athletic man Michele had known.
Mark’s post played over and over in Michele’s mind. “I said a quick prayer, mostly without thinking: God, please help Mark find someone to be his kidney donor.”
The response Michele heard from her prayer followed within seconds. “Michele, you’re someone.”
I had the honor of hearing Michele and Mark speak at the Minnesota National Kidney Foundation Gala in May. And that sentence, “Michele, you’re someone,” stuck with me. How many times have we prayed or sent powerful thoughts off, with the hope that someone will help someone? Like Michele realized, before she acted to save Mark’s life by being his donor, we should all set out to be that someone.
